    Favorite San Antonio Movie Theatres

Post  Brenkert 60 on Tue Aug 25, 2009 6:59 pm

I have worked at, and/or attended most of the San Antonio theatres that have been around in my lifetime. The old suburban theatres were my favorites. I thought they would always be here. They're now all gone, or the buildings are being used for other things. What were some of your favorite San Antonio theatres or drive ins?

My favorite suburban theatre was the Broadway. The first movie I saw there was "Bonnie & Clyde". It was always well run, clean, had comfortable seats, had a large curtained screen, and was 70mm capable. It was not as ornate as some, but everything about it was tasteful, and patron friendly.

If you haven't guessed by now, my favorite neighborhood theatre is the Hi-Ho Theatre on S. Presa in San Antonio. I attended this theatre on Saturday mornings almost every weekend in 1951 (between my 2nd and 3rd grades) My neighbors were brothers, Lee Roy and Bobby. Lee Roy was a year older and Bobby was a year younger. The three of us went every week and we got in for 10 cents each. We might have taken either a quarter or fifty cents with us. We enjoyed teasing the girls on the front row. We would sit right behind them and pull their hair or throw spit balls.

We watched our cartoons and serials, movie trailers, newsreel and a double feature. I have created my Hi-Ho Theatre on Justin TV as a tribute to these days.
