Pre 1970 Movies Empty Pre 1970 Movies

    Post  Brenkert 60 Fri Aug 28, 2009 1:08 am

There are so many good movies that were released prior to 1970. The 1960s saw the trasition from black and white to color. By the end of the decade 99+% of the films were color.

What are some memorable pre 1970 films?

Pre 1970 Movies Empty A Thousand Clowns

    Post  Brenkert 60 Fri Aug 28, 2009 1:13 am

One VERY good film I recently discovered was "A Thousand Clowns". a United Artists film that starred Jason Robards, Barbara Harris, Barry Gordon, William Daniels, and Martin Balsam (Balsam won a best supporting actor Oscar for this, and although he was good, he wasn't all that special)

This film had a lot of laughs, and excellent performances from everyone! I highly recommend it.

Now....this is a question that I can truly sink my teeth into, if everyone gets the drift! Movies that were made prior to 1970 were far better photographed, in addition to having much more style, substance, and more of a story and plot behind them. Since I love many, if not most of the pre-1970 films that I've seen, even though there were a number of them that I didn't get to see until after the 1960's had passed, and that I still love to see, and there are ones that i saw in the 1960's, but still love to go and see when they come out, here we go:

As everyone knows, my alltime favorite movie is West Side Story, hands down. I first saw it around Christmastime of 1968, as a high school senior, at a now-defunct cinema about an hour north of Boston, and I've seen it many times since, both in indy/art house movie theatres, and on TV.

Other memorable pre-1970 films for me include:

    Lawrence of Arabia

    Mutiny on the Bounty

    Midnight Cowboy

    2001: A Space Odyssey

    Georgy Girl

    Endless Summer

    Oliver

It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World

    The Disorderly Orderly

The older James Bond Movies (with Sean Connery)

    How the West was Won

    Modern Times

    Gold Rush

    Mary Poppins

    Wizard of Oz

    The Music Man

    Merrill's Marauders

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

    True Grit

The Monster that Challenged the World

    A Shot in the Dark

    Pink Panther

    Murder She Said

    Some Like It Hot

    Old Yeller

There are too many others to mention. I might well think up more later, but who knows?

Pre 1970 Movies Empty A Face In The Crowd

    Post  Brenkert 60 Sat Aug 29, 2009 11:45 am

If you've never seen "A Face In The Crowd", check it out! It is available on DVD, and if you don't have a DVD player, it is run regularly on Turner Classic Movies. In fact, it will run on TCM September 20!

Andy Griffith definitely shed his good old boy, home town image on this one! Patricia Neal is very sexy in this role. (I NEVER thought of Patricia Neal as sexy before.) It's definitely worth a look.

Also on Sep 20, another favorite "A Thousand Clowns", will be shown!

Pre 1970 Movies Empty The Plainsman

Post  Admin Sat Aug 29, 2009 2:22 pm

I just got through watching Cecil B. DeMille's "The Plainsman" made in 1937. It starred Gary Cooper, Jean Arthur, Charles Bickford, Porter Hall. Small roles for George "Gabby" Hayes and Anthony Quinn. The story of Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, Buffalo Bill and Gen. Custer. I really enjoyed the movie, but I like most of Gary Cooper's work. I'm a bit partial.

Although I never saw The Plainsman or Calamity Jane,
I did see Thoroughly Modern Millie, which was cool! I'd also like to see the movie El Cid, if that ever comes around again.

MPol: Nnice to see you again. I thought you got tired of us. You really need to get Netflix. They have 100,000 titles that will be mailed to you and 10,000 titles you can watch instantly on your computer. I love the system. Only runs $9.95 a month.

Need to ask a favor. You will notice I fixed the theatres up for all 50 states in US and all territories in Canada. Rivest266 has the Rivest website and hopefully will link to this forum to get more people to use it. I've actually opened it up for people that want to get in the movies as well. Under motion picture production there is a thread for leaving headshots and post resumes for people that work in the business. When you post about theatres, go up to the appropriate state and town or city. If there is no town or city that applies just post under the state name.
    Thanks gy2020, admin

Pre 1970 Movies Empty Hi, Gary. Thanks.

Post  MPol Sun Aug 30, 2009 9:08 pm

Netflix seems like a neat program. My family has it, and they like it a great deal, but, unlike me, they have DVD players. Watching a movie in my computer isn't at all comfortable, and it's way, way too small for a satisfactory image, plus I have to keep my bedroom light on when I do, so that takes even more of the fun out of it for me.

I still prefer seeing movies at the movie theatres, which is why I hold memberships at two indy art-house movie theatres in my area. Thanks for the info about the new theatre forum set-up for the various states. I'll have to give them a try, too.

Pre 1970 Movies Empty Re: Pre 1970 Movies

I have two computers. The main computer is in the bedroom with a 22 inch monitor and that is not bad for viewing movies. My other is a laptop with a 15 inch screen. That is kinda small, but it is convenient.

I locked three forums from the original. Other theatres in Texas, Other drive-in theatres in Texas and Other Theatres nationally. Please post in the new theatre catagories. This does NOT apply to movie forums, only the theatre forums. Nor does it apply to special forums like movie production, theatre owners, etc.

Again, thank you very much, happy posting.
